You do not need a handgun sitting beside you to complete the online classroom portion of the Texas LTC course. The online class is education. The separate handgun proficiency requirement is completed in person with a qualified LTC instructor, and equipment arrangements depend on that instructor or range.

The Online Classroom Is Education
The required classroom topics include weapons law, use of deadly force, handgun safety, nonviolent dispute resolution, and safe storage. None of that requires you to handle a firearm while watching an online lesson.
The Proficiency Portion Is Separate
Most applicants eventually need to demonstrate handgun proficiency in person. That is when a real handgun is involved, under the rules and supervision of a certified LTC Handgun Instructor.
One detail matters here, because it decides what equipment has to be on hand. The demonstration has to be done with live ammunition.
Texas Government Code Section 411.188 requires an actual demonstration of your ability to safely and proficiently use a handgun. In its Instructor Questions FAQ, DPS says target marking cartridges, sometimes called simunitions, do not satisfy that. DPS explains that only live ammunition shows you can handle the recoil and muzzle velocity. It also shows the safety skills used on a live fire range.
So a real handgun and real ammunition have to be there. That does not mean they have to be yours.

There is no reason to rush a purchase to meet a requirement the online class does not have. You can learn the law and the process first. Ask the Range What It Provides
DPS says it plainly. Some instructors may require you to use your own gun for the proficiency demonstration. Others may provide the gun, the ammunition, or both. DPS tells applicants to check with a certified instructor to find out whether they will need a handgun for the course.
