How Private Training Fits With the Texas LTC
Private firearms instruction from First Shot Training is a separate service from the Texas License to Carry process. Private lessons do not count as the official Texas LTC shooting proficiency demonstration, which must be completed with a qualified Texas LTC instructor.
Many students take a private lesson before or after the online classroom course so the fundamentals feel comfortable first. When you’re ready to begin the LTC process, the approved classroom instruction and written exam are available online through Texas Carry Academy, a third-party provider.
Build confidence with a private lesson (optional)
Safe handling and fundamentals at your pace, with no pressure.
Complete the classroom portion online
Classroom instruction and the written exam, delivered online by Texas Carry Academy. First Shot Training links you to the course.
Complete the proficiency demonstration and apply
The shooting proficiency is completed separately with a qualified Texas LTC instructor. The course provider’s instructor resources can help you find one, and independent instructors set their own fees. Your application then goes to Texas DPS.
In-Person Training FAQ
Straight answers about pricing, range fees, equipment, locations, and how private training relates to the Texas LTC.
How much does private handgun training cost?
Private Handgun Instruction is $85 for a 60-minute session. Beginner Handgun Training is $150 for a two-hour session. Firearm Safety and Familiarization is $65 for a 60-minute session with no live fire. Private Group Safety Training is $75 per person for a two-hour classroom session. Prices cover instruction only and are introductory, so your price is confirmed on your invoice.
Are range fees included?
No. Published prices cover instruction only. Shooting range admission, ammunition, firearm rentals, targets, and other required equipment are separate. Whenever possible, you’ll pay range fees and any range-provided rental or ammunition charges directly to the range. We go over expected costs before confirming your appointment. No range fee applies to classroom-only sessions that don’t use a range.
Can I bring my own ammunition?
Yes, if it is compatible with your firearm and permitted by the selected range. Some ranges have rules about outside ammunition, especially with rental firearms, so we confirm this with you ahead of time. If you don’t bring ammunition, you may purchase it separately through an authorized provider or the range, subject to availability.
Do I need to own a handgun before taking a class?
No. The Firearm Safety and Familiarization session and the group safety session are a good fit if you don’t own a handgun yet. For live-fire sessions, you may bring your own legally possessed, suitable handgun, subject to instructor review and range policies. If you don’t have a handgun, contact us before booking so we can discuss permitted rental options.
Can I rent a handgun?
Rental options depend on the range selected for your session. Where rentals are available, you follow the rental facility’s requirements, including its ammunition purchasing rules, and pay the rental fee directly to the range. We don’t advertise specific rental prices or guarantee availability. Ask before booking and we’ll walk you through the options.
What should I bring?
Bring a valid photo ID, closed-toe shoes, comfortable clothing, and any equipment we discuss during booking. Eye and ear protection are required for live-fire sessions. You may bring your own appropriate protection or arrange approved rental or purchase options where available.
Do you offer beginner handgun training?
Yes. Beginner Handgun Training is a two-hour private session designed for first-time handgun owners and beginners. It covers foundational safety, handgun familiarization, and supervised fundamentals at your pace. If you’d rather start without live fire, the Firearm Safety and Familiarization session is a great first step.
Where does training take place?
Non-shooting instruction is available at our appointment-only location in Round Rock, TX 78665. Live-fire sessions are arranged at approved local shooting ranges; First Shot Training does not operate its own range. Training at your location may be available on a case-by-case basis for sessions without live fire. We do not accept walk-ins, and the exact appointment location is provided once your appointment is confirmed.
Do you offer private group sessions?
Yes. Private Group Safety Training is a two-hour classroom-based session for three to four people, such as friends, couples, family groups, or organizations. It focuses on firearm safety, responsible ownership, safe storage, and familiarization. Live-fire group instruction is not included in this offering.
Does private training count as my Texas LTC range qualification?
No. Private instruction from First Shot Training is separate from the official Texas LTC shooting proficiency demonstration, which must be completed with a qualified Texas LTC instructor. If you take the online classroom course through Texas Carry Academy, the provider’s instructor resources can help you locate a qualified instructor; independent instructors set their own fees. We’re happy to help you understand the process.
Can I take the Texas LTC classroom portion online?
Yes. First Shot Training links students to the Online Texas LTC Class through Texas Carry Academy, a third-party online LTC course provider. The online class covers the classroom portion. The proficiency demonstration and the state application are separate steps. Learn more on our Online Texas LTC Class page.
